You just received the best facial ever and now you’re home wondering why you couldn't bring your esthetician with you. They gave you an aftercare routine but you were still waking up from the nap you took and can’t remember what to do.
Here is a guide on how to maximize your facial results and maintain your fresh glowing skin until you see them again. These are general recommendations and questions specific to the treatment you received should be asked to your skin therapist.
What should I do after my facial?
It’s a sin to touch your skin!
The first and most important factor to remember at all times, but especially after a facial, is to avoid touching your face! Yes, you have a new layer of glowing skin that looks nice and smooth, but try not to touch your face immediately after a facial or with dirty hands.
Bacteria is easily transferred by touch and you could potentially introduce them to freshly exposed pores creating breakouts and irritation. The only time it is acceptable to touch your face is with clean hands during your skincare routine.
Slightly adjust your routine.
Speaking of skincare routine, let's talk about how to adjust it during the next few days after your facial. If you receive your facial in the morning, it is recommended to complete your night time routine with only a cleanser, toner, and moisturizer. If you receive a facial in the evening, your night time routine has been completed.
Following your recent facial, avoid exfoliating for the next 3 to 4 days. Whether chemical or physical, this decreases the chance of over exfoliation since your esthetician included that step in your facial already. Usually, you can pick back up on this step in 72 hours unless specifically instructed by your skin care professional.
Be sure to keep your skin hydrated and moisturized. Ingredients like hyaluronic acids and ceramides are naturally produced in your body, so replenishing your skin with these compatible ingredients is an added benefit.
Please, wear your sunscreen! SPF protects your skin from UV rays and you should always wear it if you will be outdoors for even a short period of time. No matter your skin tone, type, or condition, always wear your sunscreen and reapply it every two hours.
Change your linens.
After your skin is fresh and clean, be sure to freshen up the toiletries you use on your entire body. This ensures that you aren't introducing bacteria and old skin cells into your open pores.
Constantly cleaning your linens is vital to healthy skincare.
Consider changing out your bed sheets and pillowcases at least once a week. Skin cells shed by the hundreds daily, and if you share a bed with children or a spouse, consider their dead cells too. Use a clean face towel daily, and switch your body washcloth and towel every 3 to 4 days.
Rebook your next facial.
Booking your facials in advance helps you maintain a schedule for self care and professional skin maintenance. Depending on the services you receive, it is suggested that you see your esthetician every 4 to 6 weeks.
We have listed out the most important factors to a general aftercare routine. Remember to avoid touching your skin, and no exfoliating products for the next few days. Clean your linens to avoid irritation and always wear your sunscreen.
