How To Use A Serum
Serums are an essential skincare product for targeted treatment of your skin concerns. Serums are multi-purpose and often address more than one problem in a single use.
Although not an absolute necessity if you’re trying to keep your routine bare bones minimal, they can be a big help in dealing with dryness, acne, redness, dehydration, and many other issues.
What Is A Serum?
A serum is a concentrated formula, containing active ingredients that target specific skin concerns. There is a near endless amount of serums on the market to help with all kinds of skin concerns like dehydration or acne.
If you’re adding a serum to your routine for the first time, it’s a good idea to start out with a Vitamin C serum in the morning and a different serum that addresses your concerns at night.
Vitamin C is a great antioxidant and anti-aging ingredient that is suitable for all skin types, all ages, and nearly all skin conditions.
How Do I Pick The Right Serum?
First, you have to identify the skin concern or condition you want to address.
Issues like excessive oiliness, dehydration, acne, or redness are all concerns that can be helped by the use of a serum. From there, you’ll want to do some research or ask a professional about what the correct corresponding ingredients would be for your concern.
For example, if you suffer from acne you’ll want to look for serums that have exfoliating and soothing ingredients listed as actives.
Ingredients like salicylic acid, mugwort, or other Beta Hydroxy Acids (BHAs) would be great choices to fight breakouts.
Or if your skin has been especially dry or dehydrated, you’ll want to find a hyaluronic acid or lactic acid serum. Hyaluronic acid helps the skin retain water while lactic acid is one of the only gentle exfoliants that also moisturize!

How Do I Use A Serum?
Serums are typically the third step in a full skincare routine. Be sure to not apply too much serum. Depending on the active ingredient, too much of a product could possibly damage the skin and lead to irritation.
To finish off your routine, follow up your serum with a moisturizer.
It’s also important to be aware of the active ingredients in the products of your entire routine to ensure you’re not mixing any two that may be harmful to the skin.
Staying consistent with a serum every day, morning and night will lead to noticeable results in about 4-6 weeks.
Step 1: Cleanse and tone within your regular skincare routine.
Step 2: After thoroughly cleansing and applying toner, dispense 1-2 drops of serum into the palm of your hands and lightly pat into the skin.
Step 3: Finish off with the rest of your skincare routine.
Serums are a great addition to a skincare routine and are the most effective way to target skin concerns and conditions. Using concentrated formulas and active ingredients will repair the skin more quickly than with just the basics. Complimentary products and a consistent routine leads to healthy and happy skin!
