A peel is a method of advanced exfoliation that helps with the skin’s turnover process.
There are common misconceptions about peels being overly harsh, but there are a variety of peels and, with proper use, yield great benefits.
We will break down what a peel is in skincare, so you will know if this is the right product for you!
What Is A Peel?
Facial peels are a treatment that sloughs away the dead skin to reveal a bright and smooth complexion.
Depending on the strength of your peel, a light peel removes the top layer of skin cells while a mild peel removes the top and middle layer of skin cells.
A peel is a great alternative to exfoliate the skin versus using an abrasive physical face scrub.
All face peels remove the top layer of skin, but deeper peels such as phenol peels can penetrate deeper.
Deeper peels are recommended for people with specific skin conditions such as melasma.
Our skin cells turnover approximately every 28 days, but this process slows down as we age. Peels are a great option to aid the turnover process!
How To Use A Peel
Before applying your facial peel, there are some important things you need to do first.
At least 48 hours before using the peel, refrain from using masks, exfoliating agents, scrubs, self-tanners, retinol serums, and creams or any other irritants.
Irritants can include products that contain AHA, BHA, and Vitamin A.
Do not remove facial hair via shaving or waxing facial hair within 48 hours on the peel area.
Step 1: Patch Test For First Time Users.
Test a small spot under your chin before applying the solution to your entire face to ensure that you have no allergic reaction to the peel.
Leave the peel on for 15-30 seconds only. Remove the peel by cleansing the area with water.
Wait 24-48 hours and monitor for excess redness or irritation.
Step 2: Cleanse Your Face.
Apply a dime-sized amount and lather between your fingertips. It is recommended to use a gentle cleanser as the peel will exfoliate your skin.
Step 3: Apply Face Peel.
Apply the peel to the face, starting with the forehead, working your way down to the cheeks and chin. Avoid contact with eyes, ears, and lips. Be aware not to leave the peel on your face for more than 5 minutes total.
Step 4: Rinse Your Face.
Use cool water to rinse the product from your skin. Make sure to rinse thoroughly; don’t leave any residue on your face.
Step 5: Gently Dry Your Face.
Grab your towel and pat your face dry just enough to remove the excess water. Your face should be slightly damp, but not dripping in water.
Step 6: Continue your routine.
After the peel is thoroughly rinsed from your face, you will need to continue your routine with your recommended products from your account.
What To Expect
After a face peel, you will notice that your skin will be refreshed and smoother, but a little dry.
Each skin type will react differently to peels, but for the most part, the side effects following chemical peels should be mild and your skin should recover within two weeks.
After a few days, you’ll start to see the skin peeling away.
The healing process is the reason peels are effective at enhancing the skin’s appearance, so it’s imperative to allow your skin to heal after treatment.
