How To Use A Facial Cleanser

Using a facial cleanser is essentially the first step to great skin; before you use any other products you first want to remove any impurities from the skin, and performing this foundational step improperly will lead to diminishing results.

While it may seem like a straightforward task, there is some surprising complexity to this first, critical step. You are someone who feels they are not getting the best out of their facial cleanser or are just starting their skincare journey, keep these steps in mind.

What Is A Facial Cleanser

A facial cleanser is a product that removes dirt, debris, or other impurities from your skin. A facial cleanser is more gentle and best suitable for the skin on your face, as opposed to hand soap or body wash which can be too harsh and irritate the skin.

How To Use A Facial Cleanser

Before you’re ready to cleanse, there are some important things you need to do first. Make sure your hands and the towel you will use to dry your face are clean. Have your cleansers ready. If you’re wearing makeup you will want to double-cleanse with an oil cleanser. Double-cleansing is essentially washing your face twice: the first time to remove any makeup, sunscreen, or other visible dirt.

You will be cleansing twice daily, every morning after you get up and every night and hour before bed. You will want to wait at least an hour before bed so that the cleanser has time to absorb into your skin.

Step 1: Use lukewarm water.

If you use hot water, it will dry your skin out. Cold water does have some benefits, like reducing the visibility of pores, but it can also irritate your skin.

If you are using a balm or oil cleanser, do not apply water until you’re ready to rinse.

Step 2: Use the proper amount.

Apply a dime-sized amount and lather between your fingertips. Resist the urge to bathe in it.

Step 3: Gently massage into your skin.

Apply the lathered cleanser to your face in a gentle circular motion. Do not scrub your face or use too much pressure. Being too rough can lead to damaged skin or wrinkles over time. Plus, cleansing is supposed to be a calming experience. Don’t forget to cleanse under your chin and neck. If you are feeling a burning or stinging sensation, rinse off immediately. The burn does not mean it’s working.

Step 4: Rinse your face.

Use lukewarm water to rinse the product from your skin. Make sure to rinse thoroughly; don’t leave any residue on your face.

If you’re double-cleaning, apply your next cleanser after removing the first one and repeat the previous steps.

Step 5: Pat dry.

Grab your towel and pat your face dry just enough to remove the excess water. Your aim is to get your skin no longer dripping, but not bone dry.

Step 6: Continue your routine.

Healthy skin does not stop at cleansing. You will need to continue your routine with your recommended products from your account.

What To Expect With A Facial Cleanser

After cleansing, your skin should feel noticeably softer and cleaner. If you are experiencing any tightness or irritation, you may be using the wrong cleanser for your skin type.

Cleansers are the foundation to any skincare routine. What you use next can vary, but we recommend using a toner after cleansing.

For great, healthy skin cleansing should always be the first step in any routine. Cleansing your face properly will allow for the maximum benefit for the rest of your products. Remember to use the proper temperature for your water, use the appropriate amount of product, and be sure to rinse thoroughly.
