How To Apply Retinol For Best Results

Retinol is widely known as the most effective ingredient for anti-aging. However, it can easily be used incorrectly which may lead to skin damage. It’s also important to note retinol use is not recommended for those who are pregnant. In this article, we’ll discuss how to get the most out of retinol for your skin.

What Is Retinol?

Retinol is a form of Vitamin A, and is a skincare ingredient often added to many different types of formulations. It is known for its anti-aging and acne clearing benefits for the skin. Many products containing retinol are available in lower concentrations over the counter, but for higher strengths a prescription is required.

Retinol comes in many forms such as creams, gels, lotions, ointments, or serums. Retinol can also be found as an ingredient in other skincare products.

How To Use Retinol

Before using retinol it’s important to do a patch test by applying it to a small area of skin to see if you’ll have any negative reactions. If after 2-4 days your skin isn’t irritated or itchy,  you’re in the clear to add retinol to your night routine!

When using retinol products, follow the instructions on the package or your esthetician/dermatologist's recommendations for application. In general, here’s some steps to take when using retinol:

  • Cleanse the skin with a gentle cleanser and pat it completely dry. It’s important your skin is dry because if it is damp, the retinol will be able to absorb more deeply into the skin which can cause irritation. Do not scrub the skin while using retinol products.
  • Use a pea-sized amount of product and apply a thin layer to the entire face. Be sure to avoid the eyes and mouth. For the first two weeks, apply retinol every other night as your skin will need to work up to daily use. If your skin becomes dry or irritated, slow your use and gradually work back up.
  • Finish with a facial moisturizer.
  • Remember to apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen in the mornings. Retinol can make the skin more sensitive to sun exposure.

What Can I Expect From Retinol?

With consistent use, retinol can offer incredible anti-aging and acne clearing results within 4-6 weeks. Retinol increases cell turnover which improves the thickness and elasticity of the skin. It also slows the production of melanin, reduces inflammation, and prevents clogged pores!

Retinol can improve several skin concerns when used properly. If you’re unsure about how to get started with retinol, consult your esthetician or dermatologist. We can also help you here at Dermava! Create a profile and one of our licensed estheticians will be happy to assist you.
